'layer after layer of civilized life seems to have veiled our directness of seeing. we often look for an underlying meaning of things while the thing itself is the meaning'

the misfits

Ever hear the story about the city man out in the country? He sees this fella sittin' on his porch, so he says "Mister... ...could you tell me how I can get back to town?" The fella says "No." "Well, could you tell me how to get to the post office?" The fella says "No." "Well, do you know how to get to the railroad station?" "No." "Boy," he says, "you sure don't know much, do you?" The fella says "Nope. But I ain't lost."

'the creative act is not performed by the artist alone; the spectator brings the work in contact with the external world by deciphering and interpreting its inner qualifications and this adds to the creative act'

mimbres pottery

from the book 'mimbres painted pottery by j.j brody
'a picture starts as nothing and becomes a microcosm, a model universe that has its own physical and structural laws. so long as it exists it transcends whatever aesthetic values motivated its producer or affected the judgement of contemporary or later uses. at different times and places it can be appreciated, disliked or ignored. the only permanent and universal message it can possibly carry and the only key available to objective understanding of it, are embodied in the peculiar logic of its forms and structure'

drawings of louise bourgeois

from the book 'drawings and observations' by louise bourgeois with lawrence rinder.
'i am more interested in the form and in the abstract quality of the drawing than in the subject. we are not talking here about the recording of emotions, the recording of motives. what we are talking about is a recording of lines and shapes; that is everything. the subject is only ;all our subjects are the same;anything i say would apply to any of us. so its not a mystery. the mystery resides in what you do with it'
